When Insurance Companies Mandate Changes For Your Electrical System

Hello Folks!  This is Frank Colburn of Franky's Electric.  This month I'd like to talk to you about a little known factor that is influencing the cost of electrical service in your home: Your Homeowner's Insurance.

Every week I receive a phone call or two about signing off on the electrical system for a homeowner who is renewing or obtaining new homeowner's insurance.  This is an important topic, so if you are a homeowner, get a cup of coffee and take some time to read the next few lines.  I will use a call I received today from a homeowner renewing their homeowner's insurance to illustrate what is going on in the insurance industry today.

The homeowner called me and wanted me to "sign-off" on their insurance documents stating that it was safe and sound and to forward the paperwork to their insurance company.
In order for me to do this, I have to inspect their home's electrical system.  Why?  First, my company carries liabilities if I just sign-off on the forms without an inspection.  Typically, an inspection will run around $250 for a residential home.  Secondly, for your safety, I cannot risk one of your most valuable assets to fire if I just sign-off on forms without inspecting your property.  Franky's Electric prides itself on integrity and ethical standards.  How comfortable would you be with an electrician that would sign off on paperwork without an inspection?

If your insurance company wants an inspection, give me a call.

Until Next Time,

Frank Colburn
